Lake Orta is one of the most famous tourist resorts, an enchanting basin in the foothills of the Alps, bounded both eastward and westward by mountains immersed in greenery.
Of great interest its charming history and its architectures which date back to the romanic and baroque period. The village of Orta San Giulio, with its square which opens to the lake, surrounded by palaces of the 16th – 17th century, is the little capital city of Lake Orta. At the back of the village, the Sacro Monte (20 chapels with statues ed frescoes dedicated to the life of San Francesco) and, opposite, the Island of San Giulio, with its romanic basilica and its ambo of the 12th century.
Other tourist resorts: Pettenasco (Medieval House), Omegna (sports and bathing facilities in Bagnella), Lido di Gozzano, Vacciago (Calderara contemporary art gallery), the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso (built on the granite cliffs overlooking the lake) and the Sanctuary Bocciola. The village of Quarna Sotto houses the museum of musical instruments.
